About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Plaza de la Revolución in La Habana, Cuba, with the Che Guevara mural on the Ministry of the Interior, photographed on an overcast day during my time in the city. I made this photo from across the wide open square, framing the façade, the Cuban flag, and the line of palms in one view.
What I like about this scene is how direct it feels. The mural is huge, simple, and impossible to miss, but the building around it tells just as much of the story. The worn concrete, the rectangular windows, and the heavy flag hanging down the neighboring block all add to the atmosphere of the plaza. It has that mix of monumentality and everyday city life that I kept noticing in Havana. Even with such a well-known political image, the street in front still has passing cars, wet pavement, and ordinary movement going on below it.
I shot this from a low, straight-on position near the edge of the square so the mural would stay dominant without losing the surrounding context. The cloudy light helped a lot. In stronger sun, the contrast here could have been harsh, but the soft light kept detail in the wall, the flag, and the trees. The damp road also added a bit of texture without pulling too much attention away from the main subject.
I used a mid-range focal length on my 24-105mm lens to keep the composition tight enough around the Ministry of the Interior while still leaving room for the Cuban flag and the greenery at the bottom of the frame. For me, that balance mattered. I didn't want only a document of the famous mural. I wanted a fuller view of Plaza de la Revolución as it actually looked when I was standing there, quiet, gray, and very open.
