About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A classic car ride in Centro Habana, La Habana, Cuba. I made this photo on a quiet, overcast day along Calle Galiano near the edge of Barrio Chino, with the old blue corner building filling most of the frame.
I liked the mix of movement and stillness in this scene. The driver and the open convertible give the picture its energy, but the real anchor for me was the long turquoise facade on the corner. The peeling paint, narrow balconies, shutters, and arcade at street level all say Havana right away without needing anything staged. I framed it from the back seat so the viewer sits inside the car with me, looking past the driver and out toward the street ahead. That angle made the ride itself part of the subject, not just the architecture.
The light was flat from the cloudy sky, which actually helped. Strong sun might have looked more dramatic, but the soft light kept the colors even and let the blue walls stand out against the gray street and sky. It also held detail in the car interior, from the wide steering wheel to the chrome trim across the dashboard. Those older design touches matter in a Havana street scene like this because the car and the buildings belong to the same visual world.
I used a wide lens here so I could keep the driver, the dashboard, and the whole corner building together in one frame. That slight stretch adds to the feeling of sitting low in the seat and turning through the street. What I like most is that nothing feels polished. The street looks lived in, the building looks weathered, and the ride feels ordinary in the best way.
