About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Rue du Fangas in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, photographed in the soft light of late afternoon. I made this image while walking through the old village, looking down the narrow lane toward one of the stone houses set right against the old wall.
What I liked most was how quiet and lived-in the street felt. The rough stone facade, the small doorway reached by a few worn steps, and the curve of the lane all give the scene a very local, everyday character. Nothing in it feels staged. It is just a simple corner of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, but that is exactly what drew me to it.
From this spot on Rue du Fangas, the village opens slightly on the right, and you can see beyond the wall toward the green hillside covered with houses and trees. That contrast is what held the frame together for me: the close texture of the medieval street in the foreground, then the wider landscape beyond it. The light was gentle and even, with a warm touch on the stone and a pale blue sky streaked with thin clouds, which helped keep the mood calm.
I kept the composition straightforward and let the street lead the eye inward. The house in the center has an odd, narrow shape that makes it stand out without needing anything else around it. The old wall on the right gives the scene structure, and the plants on the left soften the harder stone surfaces. I used a fairly wide view so I could keep both the lane and the hillside in the frame without losing the sense of being tucked into this small passage.
For me, this photo says a lot about why I enjoyed wandering in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. It is not about a famous landmark or a big view. It is about the quieter parts of the village that reveal themselves when you slow down and pay attention.
