About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Santa Margherita Ligure harbor at Porto di Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, photographed in warm late afternoon light. I took this along the waterfront promenade by Calata del Porto, looking across the marina toward the row of pastel buildings at the base of the hillside.
What I liked most was how calm the water was compared to the busy line of boats and facades. The reflections stretch out across the harbor, and the low sun gives the whole scene a soft golden edge without flattening the color. The hill behind the town adds a dark green backdrop, which helps the pale yellow, pink, orange, and cream buildings stand out even more.
I framed the photo from the stone quay on the right side of the harbor, keeping a bit of the dock in view so the scene feels grounded and not too postcard-perfect. The sailboat masts break up the skyline nicely, and the seagull passing through the blue sky added one small moving element at just the right moment. That contrast between still water, moored boats, and a quick shape in flight is a big part of why I kept this frame.
This part of Santa Margherita has a very easy rhythm to it. Nothing dramatic is happening, which is exactly why I wanted to photograph it. It felt quiet, bright, and lived-in. I used a fairly wide view to hold the boats, waterfront buildings, and hillside together in one frame, because separating them would have lost the sense of how tightly the town and harbor sit next to each other. For me, the picture works because it stays simple and lets the evening light do most of the work.
