About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A bronze guardian lion in the Forbidden City, Beijing, photographed at the Palace of Heavenly Purity in late afternoon light. I made this photo during my time inside the Imperial Palace, focusing on the warm sun hitting the metal figure and the red walls behind it.

The scene is very simple, but that is what I like about it. The lion sits low in the frame, heavy and solid, while the roofs and painted beams stack up behind it in layers. From this angle in the Inner Court, the building fills the background and gives the statue a strong sense of place without making the composition feel too busy. The low sun brought out the gold tones in the bronze and gave the red walls that deep, slightly dusty color that feels so familiar in Beijing palace architecture.

I was drawn to the contrast between materials. The polished bronze, the carved white stone railings, the red columns, and the patterned roof details all sit together in one frame. Nothing in the photo needs to move for it to feel alive. The shapes and textures do that on their own. The lion has a lot of character as well, especially with one paw resting on the decorated ball, which adds a clear focal point near the bottom of the image.

I kept the framing fairly tight so the statue would stay dominant while the palace roofs could still curve across the top of the picture. The 24-105mm range was useful for that kind of composition, letting me isolate the lion without losing the architectural context around it. For me, the photo works because it shows both the detail of the object and the atmosphere of the courtyard at the same time.
