About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Imperial Palace at the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, Beijing, photographed in clear daylight. I made this frame during my visit to the palace complex, focusing tightly on the imperial plaque and the roofline above it.
This view is centered on the signboard of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, one of the best-known buildings inside the Forbidden City. Instead of stepping back for the full hall, I wanted a closer look at the details that are easy to miss when you are walking through the big courtyards. The blue plaque, gold frame, and rows of weathered roof tiles felt strong enough on their own. I liked how the warm orange roof, deep red beams, green painted patterns, and bright gold carving all sit together in one tight composition.
The light was direct and clean, which helped bring out the texture in the ceramic tiles and the carved frame. You can see the age in the roof surface, but also the careful upkeep that keeps the building looking so precise. That balance was what caught my eye. It feels formal and decorative at the same time, which suits a place built for imperial ceremony.
I used a longer focal length for this photo so I could isolate the sign and compress the layers of roof and painted wood behind it. That tighter view let me strip away the wider crowds and open space and stay with the patterns, symmetry, and color. I also like that the framing keeps the image almost flat, turning the architecture into blocks of texture and shape rather than a typical landmark view.
For me, this photo says a lot about Beijing without needing a wide skyline or a postcard angle. The imperial scale is still there, but it comes through in the craftsmanship instead of the size. I wanted it to feel simple, direct, and close.
