About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A bird perched on driftwood in Makena State Park, near Big Beach in Wailea-Makena, Maui. I photographed it during a daytime walk along the shore, when the light was soft and the green background helped the bird stand out clearly.
What caught my eye first was the contrast between the bird and the weathered wood. The branch looks dry, pale, and twisted from years of sun and salt, while the bird brings in strong color with its yellow beak and legs, dark head, and warm brown body. That mix made the scene feel simple but balanced, so I waited for a clean pose before taking the frame.
I like wildlife photos that feel quiet and straightforward, and that was the appeal here. The bird was alert but calm, standing high on the wood and looking off to the side as if it had claimed the spot for itself. The soft blur behind it keeps the attention where I wanted it, without any clutter pulling the eye away. In a place like Makena, where the coast can feel wide open and bright, I liked finding a smaller moment like this tucked into the landscape.
I used a long lens for this photo so I could keep some distance and still fill the frame. That helped isolate the bird from the background and let the texture of the driftwood stay visible without making the image feel busy. The result is a simple portrait of a bird I came across while exploring the Makena shoreline, with just enough of the setting left in the frame to show the natural feel of the place.
It is one of those photos I keep because nothing dramatic is happening, yet the shape, posture, and color all came together in a way that felt honest and complete.
