About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A dancing couple at the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales in Plaza de Armas, La Habana Vieja, Cuba. I photographed them during a daytime walk through Old Havana, framed by the stone arcade and the heavy doorway behind them.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the formal colonial architecture and the easy, unplanned movement of the pair standing beneath it. The big arch, the worn columns, and the old hanging lamp give the scene a solid, quiet structure, while the couple bring a quick sense of life into the lower corner of the frame. I liked how small they looked against that huge doorway. It made the building feel even heavier and older, and their movement feel lighter at the same time.
I shot this from across the arcade so I could keep the full arch and most of the doorway in view. That wider bit of space around them was important to me. The photo is not really about a close portrait. It is more about scale, gesture, and the way people briefly animate historic places. In a city like Havana, that kind of moment happens all the time, and I usually try not to interfere when I see it. I would rather wait a second and let the scene settle into its own rhythm.
The long lens helped me compress the scene and isolate the couple against the textured stone and dark wood without stepping into their space. I also liked the small warm glow from the lamp above them. It adds just enough color to break up the muted wall and door tones. For me, the picture holds together because nothing dramatic is happening. It is just a simple moment of movement under one of Old Havana's most historic buildings, and that felt honest to the place.
