About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A small beach wedding on Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach in Pahala, Hawaii. I photographed this quiet moment on the Big Island during soft late-day light, with the dark sand in the foreground and a wall of palms filling the background.
What I liked most was how simple the scene felt. The couple stands near the edge of the beach, barefoot on the black sand, while the tropical trees behind them almost take over the frame. That contrast is what pulled me in: the deep black shoreline at the bottom, the bright green plants in the middle, and the tall palms rising all the way up into the cloudy sky. It made the whole setting feel very Hawaii without needing anything extra.
I framed it vertically so the height of the palms would matter as much as the wedding itself. The people are small in the composition, but that was the point. I wanted the place to share the story with them. Punaluʻu has a very distinct look, and I didn’t want to crop out the landscape just to get closer. The open space around them gives the moment some breathing room and keeps it feeling calm.
The light was gentle and a little muted, which helped the colors stay natural. Nothing feels harsh or overly bright. The white clothing stands out against the darker beach, and the pink flower leis add a bit of color without taking over the frame. I used a flexible zoom for this because it let me keep some distance and still shape the scene the way I wanted.
For me, this photo is less about ceremony and more about place. It shows how intimate a wedding can feel when it happens in a quiet corner of the coast, with lava sand underfoot and thick green palms just beyond the beach.
