About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A classic car passes an old apartment building on Paseo del Prado in Centro Habana, La Habana, Cuba. I took this photo during a daytime walk in Havana, when the street felt busy but the frame still came together in a simple, quiet way.

What caught my eye was not just the car, but the whole facade behind it. The building has the worn look I kept seeing around this part of the city: faded paint, tall arched windows, cracked plaster, open balconies, and laundry hanging out over the street. The red and white car moving across the bottom of the frame adds that familiar Havana note, but for me the real subject is the mix of movement and everyday life. Someone is standing on the balcony, clothes are drying in the open air, and people are walking past below. Nothing feels staged. It just looks like a normal afternoon unfolding in front of an old building.

I photographed it straight on from across the road along Paseo del Prado, which let the front of the building fill the frame almost like a backdrop. That viewpoint helped keep the lines simple and made the passing car work as a moving layer rather than the only point of interest. I also liked the black streetlamp in the middle, which breaks up the symmetry just enough and gives the scene a clear sense of place.

The slight motion blur in the car was important to me. I wanted it to feel like Havana in motion, not like a parked display of vintage cars. With this kind of scene, I usually prefer to show how these cars still belong to the street and to daily life. The older architecture, the hanging laundry, and the moving car all say more together than any one detail could on its own. That balance is what made me stop and take the picture.
