About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Church of the Society of Jesus in Plaza de Armas, Cusco, Peru, photographed at night during my time in the city. I took this from the square with the fountain in the foreground and the church lit up behind it.
What caught my attention was the way the fountain and the church worked together in one frame. The statue at the top of the fountain stands out clearly against the black sky, and the warm lights on the stone facade give the whole scene a calm evening feel. I liked how the water added movement while the church stayed solid and still in the background.
I made this photo from Plaza de Armas, looking toward the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús from the fountain side of the square. That angle let me use the fountain as the main foreground element without losing the shape of the twin towers behind it. The lamps, the reflections on the wet stone, and the small groups of people in the square help show what the place felt like at that hour without taking attention away from the architecture.
Night scenes like this always make me slow down a bit. During the day, Plaza de Armas is busy and bright, but after dark the details of the buildings feel different. The lighting pulls out the carvings and the edges of the church, and the dark sky simplifies everything around it. I kept the composition fairly clean and let the vertical frame emphasize both the height of the fountain and the full front of the church.
I used a mid-range zoom for this, which gave me enough flexibility to frame the fountain tightly while still keeping the church complete in the background. For me, this photo is really about the balance between movement and stillness in the center of Cusco.
