About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Sunrise over the Caribbean Sea in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. I took this on the beach by Hotel Poc Na Tulum just after first light, when the sky was still heavy with blue-gray clouds and a thin band of pink was starting to break through near the horizon.
What I liked most was the contrast between the rough water and the soft color in the sky. The sea looked dark and restless, with short waves rolling in one after another, while the sunrise stayed quiet and low in the distance. That mix gave the whole scene a calm mood, but not a still one. It felt like the day was waking up slowly.
I kept the composition simple and let the horizon sit low so the clouds could take over most of the frame. They were doing a lot of the work in this moment. The bright opening in the middle, with the warmer pink and orange tones around it, made a nice break in all the cooler blues. I also liked the darker strip of water in the foreground because it added weight and kept the scene grounded.
This part of Tulum has a very open view toward the sea, and at that hour the beach felt quiet. There is no need for much in the frame when the weather is already giving enough shape and texture. I shot it with my phone, and the wide view helped me keep both the moving water and the layered sky together without overcomplicating it.
For me, the photo is really about that short moment before sunrise fully takes over. The color is there, but only just. The light is soft, the clouds are still in charge, and the ocean is doing its own thing. That balance is what made me stop and take the picture.
