About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Reflections in Nohoch Nah Chich, near Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico. I photographed this underground pool during a visit to the cave system, standing at the water's edge and looking straight toward the curtain of stalactites hanging over the clear blue water.

What caught my attention was how calm everything felt underground. The water was still enough to mirror the cave ceiling almost perfectly, so the rock formations seemed to continue downward as much as they did above. That quiet symmetry is what made me stop and frame the scene in such a simple way.

The cave is full of texture. Thick limestone drips hang in long uneven lines, and the reflected shapes below them break softly in the ripples near the front of the frame. The turquoise water adds a strong contrast to the warm brown and cream tones of the rock, which is really what gives the photo its structure. Without that color difference, the scene would feel much flatter.

I kept the composition centered and level because the reflection was the whole point. A wider lens setting on my 24-105mm let me include both the cave wall and enough of the water surface to make the mirrored effect read clearly, without making the space feel distorted. I didn't want to overcomplicate it. The cave already had everything it needed.

I like that this photograph is quiet. There is no big action in it, just still water, mineral formations, and the soft light reaching into the cavern. It felt like one of those moments where the place does all the work for you. I just had to wait for the surface to settle and keep the frame clean.
