About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I shot this photo of the 'Monument to the Discoveries' during my visit to Lisbon. It’s located along the Tagus River in Belém, a district known for its rich maritime history. The monument is quite striking, depicting figures from the Age of Exploration. These figures are carefully crafted and seem to capture a moment of anticipation and resolve. I used my SONY DSC-R1 to capture this scene, and its capabilities really helped me focus on the intricate details of the sculptures. The blue sky served as a perfect backdrop. Did you know this monument celebrates the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death? It’s quite a central piece for anyone interested in Portugal’s history or maritime exploration. Walking around there, you really get a sense of how exploratory and ambitious that era was. Have you spent time around Belém? There's so much to see, including the nearby Jerónimos Monastery, which is just as fascinating.
