I remember the day I captured this serene moment at the Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe, Hawaii. This place, nestled at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains, is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950-year-old Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Japan. It was established in 1968 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
The temple serves as a non-denominational shrine, welcoming people of all faiths to worship, meditate or simply appreciate its beauty and tranquil surroundings. The vivid red and contrasting colors of the temple vividly stood out against the lush green backdrop of the tropical flora and the towering pines. The architecture is a testament to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, with its gracefully curved roofs topped with golden phoenixes, which in Japanese culture symbolize immortality and rebirth.
As I framed the shot, I paid special attention to the bridge leading to the temple, a symbolic passageway from the earthly to the sacred, inviting visitors to cross over into a space of peace and reflection. The calm waters surrounding the temple serve as a mirror, reflecting its elegance and amplifying the sense of tranquility that envelops this place.
I took this photo with a meticulous eye for detail, ensuring the exposure captured the intricate designs of the temple without losing the soft texture of the surrounding vegetation. It was a day with diffused natural light, perfect for accentuating the colors without harsh shadows.
