About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A couple resting on the dunes above Huacachina, Peru, photographed from the high ridge west of the oasis in late afternoon light. I took this on a cloudy desert day, looking out from the dune line over the village and the wide sand fields around it.
What I liked most was the quiet feeling at the top. The people sitting in the foreground give the whole scene a natural sense of scale, and the dog stretched out beside them makes it feel even more relaxed. From this angle, the steep slope in front drops down toward Huacachina, while the town spreads out below in a grid of small buildings before the desert takes over again. Farther back, soft dunes roll toward the horizon and the distant hills fade into the haze.
The light was muted because of the heavy cloud cover, but that worked well for this view. It kept the sand from turning harsh and let the texture show through clearly, especially in the wind-shaped ridges along the crest on the left. I like how the pale sky and warm dunes balance each other without too much contrast. The bright clothing in the foreground also helps break up the large area of sand and gives the image a simple focal point.
I framed it wide to keep both the human moment and the landscape in the same picture. The 24-105mm lens was useful here because it let me hold onto the broad view while still keeping enough detail in the town below. For me, the photo is really about that pause you get after climbing a dune in Huacachina, when you finally sit down, catch your breath, and just look out across the desert.
