About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Sunset at Slaughterhouse Beach in Lahaina, Maui, at the end of the day. I took this from the sandy edge of Mokuleʻia Bay as the sun dropped behind the point and the last light spread across the water.
What pulled me in was how simple the scene felt. The shoreline curves in from the lower left, the water stays calm, and the dark land on the left side turns into a clean silhouette against the bright horizon. Above it, the sky does most of the work. The clouds are thick in places, but they break just enough to let the warm light come through in bands of yellow, orange, and soft pink. Higher up, the blue still hangs on, so the whole frame shifts from warm to cool without feeling busy.
I like that this view keeps a quiet balance. The beach in the foreground is mostly in shadow, which gives the reflection near the waterline more weight. That strip of wet sand catches the sunset colors in a subtle way and helps lead the eye back toward the sun. On the right side, the distant landform sits low and hazy, which keeps the focus on the light without making the background empty.
I shot it vertically because the sky needed the space. A wider frame would have worked, but it would have lost some of the height and the layered cloud shapes that make the scene feel open. The 24-105mm lens was useful here because I could keep the composition tight enough to simplify the bay while still showing the beach, the water, and most of the evening sky.
What I remember most is the calm. Nothing dramatic was happening on the shore. It was just one of those Maui sunsets where the color kept changing for a few minutes, and the beach went quiet as the light faded.
