About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Road to Hana near Keanae on Maui, Hawaii, photographed in late afternoon light. I took this along Hana Highway as the road dropped into a deep green valley under a sky that looked like it might open up with rain at any minute.

What grabbed me was the contrast. The pavement in the foreground is clean and dark, the yellow center line pulls the eye forward, and then everything around it turns into thick tropical growth, steep hillsides, and layered ridges fading into the distance. It feels like one of those Maui moments where the weather changes every few minutes. Part of the valley is lit up, another part sits in shadow, and the clouds hang low enough to make the whole scene feel a little unsettled but calm at the same time.

I like how simple the composition is. The road curves gently into the frame and gives the picture a clear starting point, but the real subject for me is the landscape closing in around it. The palms, dense canopy, and the narrow cut through the valley make the drive feel both inviting and remote. Even without seeing cars or buildings, you can tell this is a road people remember because the setting does most of the work.

I shot it on an iPhone 7 Plus, and the small wide view helped me keep both the foreground road and the distant folds of the mountains in the frame without overcomplicating it. I didn’t want anything dramatic from the processing. I kept it natural so the changing light, the heavy clouds, and the saturated greens could carry the photo on their own. For me, this is the part of the Hana drive that sticks in my head most: not a famous stop, just the feeling of being on the road with rainforest on both sides and weather moving across the valley.
