About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Classic American cars parked along Avenida del Puerto in La Habana, Cuba. I photographed them by the entrance to the La Punta side of Havana Harbor on an overcast day, with the walls of Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña visible across the water.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the two cars. One is painted a deep dark color with a cream roof, and the other is a bright green sedan that almost jumps out of the frame. They sit side by side in a simple parking area, but they still have plenty of character. In Havana, cars like these are part of everyday street life, and that is exactly what I wanted to keep in the photo. I did not want a staged or polished scene. I wanted them as I found them, parked quietly near the waterfront.
The weather helped a lot. The sky is heavy and dramatic, with dark clouds and a few breaks where the light comes through. That softer light works well on old paint and chrome because it keeps the reflections under control and lets the shapes of the cars stand out. The harbor in the background and the long stone fortification give the photo a strong sense of place without pulling too much attention away from the cars.
I framed the shot low enough to give the cars presence, but wide enough to include the water, the embankment, and the old military walls across the bay. Using the 24-105mm zoom gave me enough flexibility to balance the cars with the background without getting too close. For me, the picture is less about nostalgia and more about how normal these scenes feel in Havana. These cars are famous, but in moments like this they just belong to the city.
