About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Kailua Beach Park in Kailua, Oahu, fills this photo, with the Koʻolau Range rising behind the shore. I made this frame from the low bluff at the south end of Kailua Bay on a bright but cloudy day, when the water turned a sharp blue-green under breaks in the clouds.

What I liked most was the contrast. The beach looks soft and easygoing, with pale sand, scattered palms, and small figures walking near the edge of the water, but the mountains in the background feel heavy and dark. That mix gave the scene a little more weight than a typical sunny beach view. The clouds were doing a lot of the work too. They covered much of the sky, but enough light came through to pick out the shoreline and bring out the color in the bay.

I framed it with the coastal plants in the foreground so the view would feel a bit more grounded, almost like looking through the edge of the landscape instead of standing in the middle of an open overlook. From this angle, the curve of the sand leads across the frame nicely, and the tree line helps separate the beach from the steep ridges behind it. I also liked that the water stays calm near shore while the background looks more dramatic.

This was one of those moments where I didn’t need anything complicated. The scene already had clear layers: leaves in front, bright water in the middle, beach and palms beyond that, and the mountain wall closing everything off in the distance. I used the XF16-80mm to keep that compressed coastal view without losing the sense of space. For me, the photo is really about that balance Kailua often has—calm water, open sand, and a mountain backdrop that keeps the whole place from feeling too quiet.
