About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The bell tower of Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange rises above the old streets of Menton, France, in soft late-day light. I photographed it from a narrow lane in the historic center during one of my walks through town.
What I liked most was the contrast between the formal church tower and the everyday life around it. The basilica stands tall and calm in the background, but the street in front of it feels lived in and slightly cramped, with shutters, worn walls, hanging laundry, old shop signs, and a single street lamp pulling the scene back down to street level. That mix is what made me stop. Menton has plenty of open coastal views, but I was more drawn to these tighter corners where the town feels older and more personal.
I took this near the basilica in the Vieux Menton area, looking up from one of the narrow passages that lead toward the church. The angle makes the tower feel even taller because the buildings on both sides act like a frame. I used the street itself almost like a tunnel, letting the eye travel upward from the warm facades to the pale stone and patterned dome. The light was gentle, not harsh, which helped bring out the soft peach and beige tones in the walls without losing the texture.
I also like the small details that keep it from feeling too polished. The laundry hanging out of the windows, the faded storefront lettering, the slightly uneven walls, and the shutters in different positions all give the scene a natural rhythm. I shot it with a moderate wide zoom, which helped me keep the full height of the tower while still holding onto the close, enclosed feeling of the street. For me, this frame says a lot about Menton: church, daily life, narrow lanes, and warm light all packed into one view.
