About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Monaco Yacht Club in Port Hercule, Monaco, photographed at blue hour from the terraces above the harbor. I made this frame in the evening, when the cruise ship lights had come on and the sky was still holding a soft blue tone.

I was looking out across Port Hercule toward the marina, with rows of private yachts in the foreground and a large cruise ship lined up across the water. The view is close to the Yacht Club de Monaco side of the harbor, and what I liked most was the contrast between the still water, the layered boats, and the slow, streaky cloud cover moving across the sky. The lamps in the lower part of the frame add a bit of warmth, which helps break up all the cool blue and grey tones.

Monaco can easily feel busy and polished, but this moment felt quieter. Most of the scene is clean lines and white hulls, with the harbor walls and terraces creating a nice structure through the frame. I tried to keep the composition balanced so the cruise ship would hold the center while the smaller yachts on both sides gave the image some depth. The elevated angle helped me show the full layout of the marina instead of isolating a single boat.

I used a fairly wide view for this, which suited the scene because there was a lot happening across the harbor and in the sky. The broad framing let me include the ship, the marina, the waterfront buildings, and the evening clouds all at once. For me, the photo is less about luxury and more about the atmosphere of Port Hercule at dusk, when the lights start reflecting on the water and the whole harbor settles into a calmer mood.
