About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Paracas Candelabra on the north side of Paracas Bay, near the entrance to the Ballestas Islands route in Ica, Peru. I photographed it from a boat offshore during a daytime trip along the Paracas Peninsula, with the geoglyph cut into the sandy hillside above the rocky coast.
I like that this view shows the scale of the place without trying to make it look bigger or more dramatic than it is. The huge trident-like figure stands out clearly against the dry brown slope, while the pale rock ledges and dark water at the bottom of the frame keep the coast connected to the desert above. A few birds crossing the middle distance help show just how large the carving really is.
From the water, the Candelabra feels very direct. There is not much around it, and that empty space is part of what makes it work in a photograph. The hill is bare, the sky is plain, and the lines of the geoglyph do all the work. I kept the composition simple so the shape stays central and easy to read, with the shoreline left in the frame to give some context instead of isolating the symbol completely.
The light was flat and soft, which actually suited the scene well. Stronger light might have made the slope harsher, but this gentler daylight let the etched lines stay visible without too much contrast. I used a long lens to pull the hillside closer and compress the distance between the water, the cliff, and the carving. That made it easier to show the Candelabra as part of the coastal landscape rather than as a distant detail.
This was one of those places I had seen many times before in books and travel photos, so it was satisfying to finally photograph it for myself from the same sea approach that most people experience.
