About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach in Pāhala, Hawaiʻi, is shown here on a cloudy daytime visit along the Big Island coast. I made this photo from the rocky edge of the beach, looking across the black sand, palms, and surf from the left side of the cove.

What I liked most was the contrast. The dark volcanic sand and lava rock make the whole shoreline feel heavier and quieter, while the row of tall coconut palms behind it gives the scene that unmistakable tropical look. The light was changing fast under a thick layer of clouds, with a few brighter breaks overhead, and that helped bring out the greens in the trees without losing the darker tones in the beach.

I framed the picture so the lava rock in the foreground would lead into the curve of the shoreline. The small waves breaking against the rocks add movement, but the beach itself still feels calm. There are a few people scattered along the sand, which helps show the scale of the palms and the width of the beach without turning the photo into a crowd scene.

Punaluʻu is one of those places that looks different from most beaches in Hawaiʻi right away. The black sand, the rough lava shelf, and the dense line of palms all sit close together, so it feels compact but layered. I wanted to keep that balance in the composition and let the textures do most of the work.

I shot it with my Canon 5D Mark IV and a 24-105mm lens, which gave me enough flexibility to include both the foreground rock and the full line of trees without having to overdo the wide-angle look. For me, this photo is really about the meeting point between volcanic land and a softer coastal scene.
