About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A cow skull stands on a post at Kaihalulu Beach in Hana, Maui, on a bright tropical day. I took this photo from the rocky shore below the red sea cliffs, with waves rolling in from the open Pacific.
What caught me first was how strange and casual the whole scene felt. The skull looks almost like a handmade sign, planted there to greet anyone who makes it down to the beach. Behind it, the coastline does the rest of the work: dark lava rocks, white surf, a steep cliff with red and brown tones, and one palm leaning into the frame. It has that rough, slightly wild look that makes this part of Hana feel different from the more polished beach spots on Maui.
I liked the contrast between the dry, weathered skull and everything around it feeling alive and in motion. The ocean was breaking hard against the point, sending spray up in the background, while the sky stayed clear and deep blue with a few soft clouds drifting through. The light was strong and direct, probably around midday, which helped bring out the texture in the rocks and cliff face instead of flattening them.
I framed the skull off to the right so it would feel like part of the shoreline rather than the only subject. That also let me keep the curve of the surf and the cliff in the shot, which gives more context to the place. I was using my 24-105mm zoom, and that range worked well for balancing the foreground object with the wider coastal view without making either one feel too far away.
For me, this photo is really about the odd little details you come across when you slow down and look around. Hana has plenty of big postcard views, but I often remember scenes like this just as much.
