About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Baby Beach in Lahaina, on the shoreline along Ala Moana Street near Puunoa Point in Maui, is shown here on a bright tropical day. I made this photo from the edge of the sand under the palms, looking along the curve of the beach as the water moved in gently.

What I liked most about this spot was how quiet and protected it felt, even with the open water stretching out to the right. The line of leaning coconut palms gives the whole scene its shape, and the low angle from the beach lets them fill the frame against that deep blue midday sky. I was standing close to the vegetation at the back of the sand, so the foreground stays intimate while the shoreline pulls the eye farther down the coast toward Lahaina.

The light was strong and direct, which worked well for this scene because it brought out the contrast between the bright green leaves, the warm sand, and the clear blue water. There are small waves washing onto the beach, but the water still feels calm, which fits the character of Baby Beach. It is not a big dramatic shoreline. It is more about the easy rhythm of the place and the way the palms lean over the water.

I used a wide lens for this one so I could include the full height of the trees and still keep the beach and water in the frame. That wider view also helped exaggerate the angle of the trunks, which is a big part of why the scene feels so immersive. For me, the photo is really about that classic west Maui mix of shade, sand, warm water, and dense coastal greenery all packed into one small stretch of shore.
