About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Pont Julien near Bonnieux, France, is a Roman stone bridge over the Calavon, and I photographed it on a calm autumn afternoon. I took this view from the rocky riverbed below the bridge, where the still water gave me a clean reflection of the main arch.

What I liked most was the contrast between the old bridge and the newer road crossing tucked behind it. The Roman arch stays dominant, but that second structure quietly places it in the present day. From this low position, the curve of the bridge and its reflection almost form a full circle, which gave the composition a simple shape to build around. The pale stone, rough rocks, and shallow water all work together without feeling busy.

The trees were starting to turn, so there is a mix of green and yellow around the bridge that softens all the stone. The light is gentle rather than dramatic, with a slightly overcast sky that keeps the tones even and lets the texture in the masonry show through. I prefer that kind of light for old structures like this because it feels honest and doesn't push the scene too hard.

A few small figures on top of the bridge help show the scale, but the place still feels quiet. The water below was calm enough to mirror the arch, the trees, and parts of the sky, and that reflection is really what made me stop. I used a moderate wide view with my Canon EOS 7D and EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 to include both the bridge and the foreground pool without making the scene feel stretched. This photograph comes from my time exploring Provence, when I kept finding places where history sits very naturally in the landscape.
