A Young Lady in the Forbidden City

A young woman in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. I photographed her at the Palace Museum, inside the imperial palace complex in central Beijing, during a daytime walk through the courtyards.

What caught my eye first was the mix of old and new. She was dressed in a styled outfit that nodded to historical clothing, but her relaxed smile and peace sign made the moment feel very current and very real. I like that contrast. The Forbidden City can feel huge and formal, with its long lines, red walls, and carefully ordered spaces, so a simple human moment like this helps bring it back down to a personal scale.

I made this portrait fairly close, keeping the focus on her expression, makeup, and the tall headpiece with the bright green feather. The background falls soft enough to show the setting without fighting for attention. You can still read the palace architecture in the muted roof tiles and walls behind her, but the frame stays centered on the person in front of me. That balance was important to me because I wanted the location to be present without turning the portrait into a postcard.

The light was gentle and even, which worked well for a face this close to the camera. There are no harsh shadows, and that helped keep the colors in her clothing and headwear clean and easy to read. I used the zoom lens in a simple way here, just to tighten the composition and separate her from the background a bit. Nothing flashy, just a straightforward portrait made in a place where people usually look past each other toward the buildings.

What I remember most is how open and unforced the moment felt. In a site that carries so much history, I liked finding a frame that felt friendly and present instead of distant.
