About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Yu Garden District in Shanghai, China, photographed in the late afternoon during my visit to the old bazaar area. I took this view beside the ponds and walkways of Yuyuan Tourist Mart, looking across the water toward the traditional buildings around the garden quarter.

What I liked most in this scene was the mix of calm and activity. The water, the small bridge, and the stone railing in front gave me a quiet foreground, while the busy walkways and layered rooftops filled the frame behind them. The bright flowers at the edge helped soften the scene and added a strong bit of color against the red wooden facades and grey tiled roofs.

Yu Garden District has a very specific look that stands out from the rest of modern Shanghai. The curved rooflines, the carved details, and the compact arrangement of the buildings make the whole area feel dense in a good way. There is a lot to look at, but it still feels organized. I wanted to keep that sense of depth, with the flowers close to me, the pond and statue in the middle, and the long row of historic-style buildings in the background.

The light was soft and slightly diffused, which worked well for this kind of scene. It let the colors stay rich without getting too harsh, and it kept detail in both the sky and the architecture. I used a mid-range focal length on my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with the 24-105mm lens so I could hold the whole composition together without making the buildings feel too stretched.

For me, this photo is less about a single landmark and more about the atmosphere of the neighborhood. It shows the part of Shanghai where water, footbridges, garden walls, and traditional architecture all come together in one compact view.
