An Unexpected Encounter

An Andean local stands on the snowy slopes of Ausangate near Vinicunca in the Cusco Region of Peru, photographed during a clear daytime hike in the dry season. I made this photo on the mountain trail not far from Abra Warmisaya, where the high-altitude views open up across ridges, snowfields, and the long line of the Andes.

I like this frame because it feels simple and direct. I was surrounded by big mountain scenery, but what caught my eye was the person stepping into that wide white landscape in bright traditional clothing. The contrast between the red and turquoise fabric and the pale ground made the scene come together right away. Nothing about it felt staged. It was just one of those brief moments on a trail when the whole setting suddenly makes sense in front of the camera.

The light was clean and strong, with the kind of sharp midday clarity you get at this altitude. Snow patches covered the foreground, while the darker rocky peaks behind gave the background some weight without pulling attention away from the subject. I left plenty of space around him so the mountains could stay part of the story. That sense of scale mattered as much to me as the portrait itself.

I shot it with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a 24-105mm lens, which was useful here because I could keep a natural perspective while still isolating him against the landscape. I didn’t want an overly tight portrait. I wanted the encounter and the place to sit together in the same frame.

For me, that is what this photograph is about: a quick human moment in a huge part of the Andes, high above Cusco, where the cold ground, bright sun, and quiet space all meet at once.
