About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Hacienda San Jose in El Carmen, Peru, shown in daylight inside the main bar room. I photographed it during my visit to the old hacienda, from the seating area facing the long wooden counter.
What drew me in was how calm and lived-in the room felt without needing anything staged. The dark wood bar runs almost the full width of the frame, with a neat line of stools in front and shelves of bottles backed by a mirror. In the foreground, the soft green armchairs and small round tables make the space feel more like a lounge than a formal hotel bar. The chandeliers hanging from the high timber ceiling add a warm glow, even with daylight already coming through the open doorway and the tall window on the right.
I like the contrast between the different textures in this room. The polished wood, the patterned wallpaper, the worn tile floor, and the upholstered chairs all sit together in a way that feels old but still comfortable. The green upper wall also ties in nicely with the plants visible through the window, so the room doesn’t feel closed off. Even though it’s an interior, there’s still a sense of the bright afternoon outside.
I kept the framing wide to show the full layout of the space instead of isolating details. That worked well here because the balance of the room is part of the subject: the bar on one side, the seating area on the other, and the chandeliers holding everything together above. For me, the photo is really about the quiet character of Hacienda San Jose and the way its historic interiors still feel usable and welcoming.
