About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area in Waimea, Hawaii, is shown here on a bright daytime walk along the shoreline. I photographed it from the sandy curve of the beach near the south end, looking back toward the resort buildings and palms under a wide blue sky.

What I liked most about this scene was how open and calm it felt. The water was a clear blue-green, the waves were small, and the wet sand picked up just enough reflection to give the foreground some shape without making the whole frame feel busy. Hapuna is one of those places that can look almost too clean and simple at first, but that simplicity is exactly what made me stop and take the photo. The long sweep of sand, the gentle line of foam, and the low dark rocks in the distance all worked together in a very easy way.

I kept a fairly wide view so the beach could lead the eye from the lower edge of the frame toward the center, where the shoreline bends and the buildings sit back behind the trees. The clouds helped a lot too. They gave the sky some movement and kept it from turning into one flat block of blue. Midday light can be harsh in Hawaii, but in this case it worked because the colors were clean and the beach was bright without losing the soft look of the sand.

I made this photo during my time on the Big Island, and I wanted it to feel honest to what standing there was actually like. Not dramatic, just clear, warm, and relaxed. The Canon 5D Mark IV with a 24-105mm lens was useful here because I could stay wide enough to hold the full curve of the beach while still keeping the distant details natural.
