The Green Sand Beach

Papakolea Beach near Naalehu on Hawaii's Big Island is the green sand beach in this photo. I took it on a bright daytime visit from the rocky edge above the cove, looking across the dark sand, the surf, and the steep volcanic cliffs that wrap around the bay.

What I liked most was the contrast. The water is a clear blue-green, the beach has that unusual olive tone, and the cliff behind it looks dry, layered, and rough from years of wind and waves. From this higher angle, I could show how small the beach feels compared with the walls of the crater-like cove around it. The line of foam moving up the shore also helped give the frame some movement without making it feel busy.

Papakolea is one of those places that already feels a little unreal when you first see it in person. The color of the sand is the obvious reason people come, but I also liked the shape of the coastline. The rock shelves, worn edges, and curved shoreline make the scene feel naturally built for a wide landscape photo. There are people scattered along the beach and in the water, but I kept the focus on the setting itself and on the scale of the place.

I shot this with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and a 24-105mm lens, which worked well for this kind of view. I didn't need anything extreme. A practical zoom let me frame the whole cove, keep the cliff face strong in the composition, and still hold enough detail in the beach and waves. For me, this photo is really about the meeting point between volcanic land and open ocean, and about how different the colors look at Papakolea from almost any other beach in Hawaii.
