About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo, Hawaii, shows one of the park’s huge old trees beside a stone lantern and torii gate. I photographed it during the day in Liliuokalani Park and Gardens on Banyan Drive, on a calm visit to the Japanese garden area.

What caught my eye first was the shape of the canopy. The branches spread so far outward that they almost seem to draw a roof over the whole scene, while the roots push across the ground in every direction. I liked how the stone lantern on the left gives the frame a clear anchor, and the torii gate in the background adds just enough context to show the Japanese garden setting without taking attention away from the tree itself.

I took this from a low, wide viewpoint so the trunk, roots, and branch structure would all stay connected in one frame. That angle also let the tree feel even broader, with the limbs reaching nearly edge to edge. The light was soft and flat, which worked well for a subject like this. There were no harsh shadows fighting with the details, so the bark, moss, and tangled lines of the branches all stayed easy to read.

What I like about this photograph is that it feels quiet and grounded. Liliuokalani Gardens is known for its bridges, ponds, and traditional details, but I was just as interested in this older tree and the way it holds the space around it. The scene has a balanced mix of built elements and natural growth, and that contrast is what made me stop. I used a wide focal length to keep the full spread of the tree in view while still including the lantern and part of the garden entrance.
