About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Papakolea Beach near Naalehu, Hawaii, seen from the trail-side overlook above the cove in daylight. I took this photo on a clear day from the rim above the beach, looking down at the olive-green sand, the dark volcanic rock, and the bright blue water rolling into the small bay.

What drew me in was the contrast. The beach has that muted green tone that makes Papakolea stand out right away, but it sits between rough gray cliffs and a clean stretch of ocean that shifts from turquoise near shore to a deeper blue farther out. From above, the whole shape of the cove is easy to read. The curved shoreline, the foamy edge of the surf, and the layered rock walls all come together in a way you don't really see once you're standing on the beach itself.

I liked shooting it from this higher angle because it shows the place as a full scene instead of just a close detail. The people on the sand help give a sense of scale without taking over the frame. They make the cliffs feel bigger and the beach feel more tucked away. The midday light is fairly even, which worked well here because it kept the textures in the rock visible and let the different colors in the water stay clear.

I used a mid-range zoom for this view, which let me frame the cliff face and shoreline tightly enough without losing the open water beyond. For me, the best part of the photo is how raw the landscape feels. It has a quiet, worn look, with soft shapes carved into the rock and a narrow strip of sand at the bottom holding everything together.
